DaRe-X: Promoting the transition to a circular economy

The circular economy must evolve to ensure we live within the planet's carrying capacity. The DaRe-X co-innovation joint project aims to promote the manufacturing industry's transition to a circular economy through practical examples and applicable tools.

Implementing the circular economy in many industrial products is challenging due to a lack of know-how, suitable data, and business models. Right now, circularity mainly involves recycling materials at the end of a product's life. More advanced processes, such as refurbishing, remanufacturing, and repurposing, have yet to be systematically developed. The DaRe-X project will address this issue, particularly in the heavy machinery industries, by creating new data sources and technologies based on the life cycle data of digital twins. For example, it’s about developing life cycle analysis methods and circular economy indicators to help companies make better decisions, such as when to refurbish a device or dismantle it for spare parts.

Participating companies in the DaRe-X project are Glaston, Konecranes, and Mitsubishi Logisnext Europe, with support from solution providers Atostek and Kaltiot Technologies. Other business partners include Sofidium, Danfoss Editron, and Mirka, along with their leading company ecosystems. This large interdisciplinary Business Finland financed co-innovation project is lead by LUT University and involves research groups from both LUT and the University of Oulu.

"Joining the DaRe-X project allows Mirka to contribute to the green transition through collaboration with academic institutions and industry leaders. By developing improved business models that utilize data, we support remanufacturing and extending product lifecycles, which are among the most effective ways to reduce the carbon footprint”, says Mats Bystedt, Business Development Manager at Mirka.
