Building a Take-Back System?
The SHAPE Take-Back Forum is a collaborative space for companies planning, developing, piloting, or operating systems for collecting used products and returning them for reuse through recycling.
The forum brings together companies from Finland and beyond that are working to make product take-back and reverse logistics a practical part of their business while creating value for customers and partners across the value chain. It offers an opportunity to exchange experiences, discuss common challenges, and learn from organisations at different stages of developing their systems.
Why do take-back systems matter?
Take-back systems are an important part of the transition towards circular business models. They help to keep products and materials in use for longer, support repair and remanufacturing, and create better opportunities for recovery and recycling.
At the same time, developing a functioning take-back system involves many interconnected questions. Companies need to consider how products are collected and transported, how customers can be encouraged to participate, how regulatory requirements are met, and how the system can remain cost-efficient as it grows. Success also depends on cooperation between manufacturers, service providers, logistics companies, customers, research organisations, and other partners across the value chain.
Mirka is currently initiating pilot tests with selected customers to explore how used abrasives can be collected and returned for recycling at the Mirka Circular Grain Manufacturing plant. The aim is to recover abrasive grains for use in producing new abrasives. The pilots will provide practical insights into the collection, processing, and transportation requirements needed to develop a viable take-back system.
