Motivating Sustainability in Companies: A Values-Based Approach

This article explores why technical solutions alone are not enough to drive sustainable transformation. Drawing on research conducted in rural Finnish companies, within the SuFiRe project (Towards a Sustainable Finnish Re-manufacturing Industry​), it highlights how employees’ core values influence attitudes and behaviors related to energy use, material efficiency, and circularity. By understanding and actively working with values such as community well-being, autonomy, and predictability, organizations can create more meaningful and engaging approaches to sustainability.
